2014 could see even more health insurance shopping

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - In 2014, there could be many more people shopping for health insurance.

The employer mandate provision of the law kicks in in 2015, so business owners will have to decide if they'll provide insurance to their employees or pay a penalty.

Recently, the Michigan Association of Health underwriters invited business owners around the state to a forum to get their questions answered.

Each individual business is different, depending on the number of employees they have, and the amount those employees are paid.

"What we see, a lot of small business owners that have lower paid low wage workers and they think they'll be able to get free coverage or reduced cost coverage, but they forget that if they cancel their group plan, they cancel it for themselves as well, and they're giving up all the tax benefits of an employer offering coverage," said Jeff Thomas, with the Michigan Association of Health Underwriters.

Regardless of the cost, many employers choose to offer health coverage because it helps them attract and retain good employees.
