Man shot by police due in court

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The man shot by a Portage Public Safety officer earlier this month is scheduled for a court appearance Monday afternoon.

33-year-old Michael Van Mackins is charged with four felonies, including restraining a person with a weapon and assault.

Monday, a judge will decide if there is enough evidence to send Mackins to trial.

Police say Mackins stabbed a woman in the face in a car at the corner of Romence Road and Constitution Boulevard, then took off running.

He was found by officers at Crossroads Village Apartments.

To stop the threat an officer says he had to shoot Mackins.

Michigan State Police are investigating the incident.
