Kalamazoo teen arrested for stealing presents in home invasion

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A 14-year old home invasion suspect is at the Kalamazoo County Juvenile home this morning which is ironically where he ran to last night.

It all started around 9:15 p.m. Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers were called to the 1,000 block of Sherwood Avenue for a report of a man with a gun.

Witnesses say they found someone in the driveway opening a wrapped Christmas present.

When the witness confronted the subject, the subject picked up a bag of Christmas presents and a handgun off of the ground and then fled the scene on foot.

Officers determined that the subject stole the presents after entering an enclosed porch at a neighboring residence.

A K-9 team was brought in to help track the suspect who was later spotted by a Kalamazoo Township Officer in the 1,500 block of Humphrey Street but again the teen took off.

He was eventually caught trying to climb the fence to the Kalamazoo County Juvenile home.

Police say that's when they recovered a bag of stolen presents and a fake handgun.

The presents were returned to the family and were all accounted for.

The suspect, who is a fourteen year-old Kalamazoo resident, was lodged at the Kalamazoo Country Juvenile home on the charge of Home Invasion and an outstanding detention order pending review by the prosecutor's office.
