Michigan taxpayers come through for local animal shelters

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Michigan taxpayers really came through for animal shelters this year.

Twenty-two animal shelters across Michigan have been awarded nearly $185,000, from a state fund that residents voluntarily contribute to on their tax returns.

The money will go to, among other things, spaying and neutering animals, and registration fees.

The Animal Welfare Fund was created under a 2007 law, and began distributing money in 2010.

Nearly $700,000 has been handed out to 82 shelters in that time.
