Mother speaks out after township removes daughter's gravesite decorations
ALLEGAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A mother has informed Newschannel 3 that Allegan Township removed decorations from her daughters gravesite.
For 9 years, Shelly Grauman has been decorating her daughters grave for Halloweenwhich is also her daughters birthday.
Grauman says the township has never has never had a problem with itthat is until now.
Its not just about halloweenGrauman says her daughter loved all holidays and for 9 years shes been decorating her gravesite for each occasion.
Grauman says she always follows the cemeterys guidelines, and she says theyve had any problemswhich is why she cant understand why they were removed this year.
These were her angels, they represent what a special angel she is, Shelly said.
Shelly Grauman lost her 15-year-old daughter Courtney to brain cancer 9 years ago.
She was my only child; we were very very close, Shelly said.
Every Halloween since then, Grauman has decorated her gravesite in honor of the holidaybut also Courtneys birthday.
These are just little trinkets that I need to do to feel comfort and to feel at peace, she explained.
But this year, the day before Halloween, all of the decorations disappeared.
I was very sad; I called my mom, I was crying, Shelly said.
Grauman originally thought they were stolen, but says she learned the township removed them.
It just means a lot to mefor them to take it down, she paused for a moment. It really hurt.
Today the township returned her decorations, so Grauman put them back up. What she doesnt understand is why they were taken down in the first place.
It doesn't hurt anyone and its not permanent, she said.
Today, Grauman removed the decorations on her own terms.
But before leaving, she took a moment to say goodbye; promising to return in December, with Christmas decorations for her little girl.
We did try to get in touch with the township today. We left messages and stopped by but their offices are closed today and we have not heard back.
As for Grauman shes still looking for apology, and is wondering whether or not those Christmas decorations will be removed as well.
