Update on woman struck by car while out trick-or-treating with her children
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A mom with her two kids out for a night of trick-or-treating is hit by a car.
The woman was hit crossing South Westnedge Avenue at Parkwood Avenue by a car going north.
Now she is clinging to life in the hospital.
People who live on Westnedge Hill near the intersection with Parkwood say they are used to seeing car crashes here.
But what happened in front of their homes Thursday night was even more disturbing.
A mom trick or treating with her two kids, one five, the other a year old was clipped as she crossed Westnedge.
"As I came out they were just putting her in the ambulance but you could still see what looked like a costume a wig was still in the road and a candy bucket," says Mark Liddle.
Police say the womans injuries were critical, the kids were not hurt.
Last night was dark and rainy but neighbors say its always a spot they worry about because it's a blind area for drivers.
"We get a lot of t-bones, cars crossing Westnedge and you get t-bones, I've seen cars getting flipped over against the fire hydrant," says Liddle.
"I think it's just a reflection of the fact that the street is a little bit dangerous and people aren't paying as much attention as they should be," says neighbor Christine Babcock.
Some of the neighbors here say they have even worked to petition the city commission to ask for a lower speed limit.
"I understand it is Westnedge it's a lot busier than most but streets but still it's residential," says neighbor Edmund Kruczynski.
Police have not said if the driver involved might have been speeding and they have not identified the woman who was hit.
