Coalition focusing on youth concussions
NEWSCHANNEL 3 - Some of the country's largest youth sports organizations are teaming up to tackle one of the biggest issues in athletics: concussions.
The new National Sports Concussion Coalition is made up of many national groups that have branches here in West Michigan. That includes Pop Warner, USA Hockey, USA Basketball and USA Football.
The coalition's main goal is to address the issue without turning kids away from sports.
They say they are going to partner with concussion experts and athletic medicine professionals to find the best ways to diagnose and treat young athletes.
They also plan to share research about concussions in specific sports and pool money to create outreach programs. Those programs would educate both the kids and their families.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly a quarter-million young athletes are taken to the emergency room for traumatic brain injuries, including concussions, each year. Many others go undiagnosed.
This new coalition hopes to make sports safer for kids nationwide.
