Bill would require U.S. flags to be made in the U.S. for veteran graves
LANSING, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The Michigan Senate has unanimously approved a bill to require local governments to buy U.S. made American flags when marking a veteran's grave.
Current law requires municipalities, upon petition of a veterans organization or at least five citizens, to provide a flag and flag holder for any vet who is buried in any local public or private cemetery.
The bill would not allow cities and towns to purchase foreign-made flags or holders if there is a comparable and competitively priced product made in Michigan or somewhere in the U.S.
If a foreign made flag or holder was bought the municipality would be required to post notice of that action on its website and explain the reason.
The bill now goes to the state House for consideration.
