Learning more about man suspected in Sturgis murder
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Newschannel Three is learning more about a man suspected of killing his former boss in their Sturgis office.
36-year-old Andy James Brown of Kalamazoo was arraigned in Saint Joseph County District Court Thursday.
He's accused of embezzling $100,000 from David Locey, a CPA in Sturgis where he was once an employee.
Locey was shot and killed yesterday and Brown has been identified as a suspect.
Investigators still are not saying why they suspect Brown but Newschannel Three has learned Brown, who lives in Kalamazoo, was an accountant who worked with Locey to bring in clients to the business.
We talked to one of Brown's client businesses Thursday who told us on Tuesday it received a letter and a bill from Loceys office.
Thinking it was a mistake the business called the accounting firm and explained they had already paid --- writing out checks directly to Andy Brown.
The business set up a time to talk with David Locey on Wednesday, but that morning he was found shot and killed in his office.
The owners of that client business say when they saw the news they called police to let them know what had been going on.
Sources tell us brown had recently purchased several big ticket items like a cabin, a new car and a boat. We went to Brown's home but no one came to the door.
According to the client of Browns we talked to, the main office and Locey had no idea Brown was still doing accounting work and payroll for them.
Also on Thursday dive teams were searching parts of the Prairie River in St. Joseph county looking for the gun that was used to kill Locey.
