Portage Police ID victim in fatal US-131 crash
PORTAGE, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Portage Police have identified the victim in a fatal one-car crash which tied up traffic on southbound US-131 for hours on Monday.
20-year-old Brayden Jeffery Barnum, of Vicksburg, was killed when a car he was driving went off the left side of southbound US-131 near the I-94 interchange, and struck an abutment.
Both southbound lanes of the highway were shut down near exit 34, as Portage Police responded to the fatal crash.
Police say the 9-1-1 call came in shortly before 5:00 p.m.
Witnesses reported that the vehicle swerved off the road, and at this time, police aren't sure what caused the crash.
Police say Barnum was not wearing a seat belt and hit the cement underpass head-on, going 70 miles an hour.
The impact ejected him from the vehicle and he died at the scene.
Police diverted traffic off US-131 to I-94 for about 2 hours as they reconstructed the accident scene.
Portage Police say they did not find anything illegal in the car.
