WEST MICHIGAN (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Locally, the shutdown has had an effect. The Battle Creek Federal Building has had some employees go home Tuesday. A majority of the federal employees are still working though.
At Fort Custer Training Center there are five Michigan National Guardsmen that were furloughed. Eight are still working because they are considered essential employees, meaning they are firefighters or emergency personnel.
There are 900 National Guard employees statewide that have been furloughed.
Veterans Hospital in Battle Creek has been fielding a lot of calls regarding whether they are open. The hospital is open as usual.
