Kalamazoo man training for 100 marathons in 100 days
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - It sounds crazy, but a man in Kalamazoo is training to run 100 marathons in 100 days.
Daren Wendell plans to run coast to coast, from California to New York, in 2015.
There have only been 252 individuals who have ever done this, Wendell says.
Wendell is an endurance athlete and no stranger to completing the impossible.
And he does it all for a good cause: ActiveWater.
Wendell founded ActiveWater in Kalamazoo several years ago.
The non-profit partners with athletes all over the country to bring clean water to third world countries.
I believe he can do it, says ActiveWater co-founder Amie Hadaway. There have been times he's come up with campaigns and I have doubted him, like swimming across Lake Michigan seemed a little far-fetched.
In 2011, Wendell swam across the lake to raise awareness for the cause.
It took 35 hours nonstop to swim over 50 miles, says Wendell. I have also cycled across the country, which is 4400 miles and took me 74 days. I completed an Ironman and Ive done many marathons and half marathons.
But even for an endurance athlete like Wendell, 3,000 miles of pounding the pavement requires a whole new level of motivation.
We want people to come out and Forrest Gump-style run with me every day, Wendell says. We will have it all posted online so you can check out where Im going to be and you can just meet me that morning and run with me throughout the day. So it mixes Forrest Gump with flash mob marathons.
In this latest campaign, called Run Daren Run, he hopes to raise more than 100,000 dollars for clean water in Africa and Cambodia.
Part of the work we do is not only drilling wells but also empowering the people there to take care of them, Wendell notes. Faith is important to me and I need to use my gifts to help those in need. So this is a way for me to carry that out.
Wendell estimates he will go through 27 pairs of shoes by the time he has completed his cross-country trek.
He also plans to eat about 7,000 calories a day.
Run Daren Run kicks off January 1, 2015 in Santa Monica, California. From there, he will run a marathon every day for 100 days until he reaches Times Square in New York.
