Talons Out: Honor Flight veterans return to W. Michigan
WEST MICHIGAN (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A group of West Michigan veterans are home after being honored over the weekend.
21 men and women who fought in World War II, and one Vietnam veteran took the trip of a lifetime, to Washington, D.C.
The veterans gathered early Saturday morning at WMU's campus.
They flew from Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids to Washington, to see the monument that was built for them--the National World War II memorial.
They returned on Saturday night to a hero's welcome.
The veterans couldn't believe the outpouring of support from the community.
"I didn't know that they cared that much, and they really responded," said honoree Albert Homoki. "We had the police escort going and coming back. It's amazing."
A donation by Gun Lake Casino made the trip possible for veterans.
