Kalamazoo man dies in early-morning crash
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Police are continuing their investigation into a deadly crash early this morning in Kalamazoo.
It happened near a cemetery on East Paterson Street around 3 a.m. Saturday. Police followed a car after the driver refused to pull over.
Only a few indicators of what happened here at the intersection of East Paterson and Riverview Drive in Kalamazoo early Saturday morning, some rocks are missing from the wall, the traffic sign is bent in the wrong direction.
Investigators tell Newschannel 3 they tried stopping a driver on Krom Street. They believed the driver was drunk. The 27-year-old Kalamazoo resident sped away, officers only chasing for a short distance before they pulled back. The driver crashed into a stone wall outside the Riverside Cemetery.
Chief Jeff Hadley of the Kalamazoo Department of Public safety says "We're still trying to get through all those details in terms of our investigation. We certainly have to pull the video of the officer's in-car camera, as well as some of the other factors."
After colliding with the stone wall, police tell us emergency crews extricated the driver from the car...and tried life saving measures, but it was too late. The 27-year-old died on scene.
Investigators are still wondering why the driver ran away from the traffic stop in the first place...crashing less than a mile from the initial encounter...
Hadley says, "It is tragic, very unnecessary. When folks flee from the police, it's not only dangerous for the person fleeing. It's dangerous for the officer and it's dangerous for the community."
