Community gives back to sergeant fighting cancer
LAWTON, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A West Michigan community is gathering help a sergeant battling cancer.
The benefit spaghetti dinner, bake sale and silent auction for Van Buren County Marine Division Sgt. Chad Jahr is happening at the Lawton Community Center.
The community center is filling up with people who are ready to help Jahr and his family, one plate of spaghetti at a time.
Jahr serves Van Buren County as a 9-1-1 dispatcher, and sergeant in the sheriff's marine division, but treatment for stage 4 colon cancer has kept him from working.
Jason Fisk works in the marine division with Jahr. He's helped organize the benefit that's serving spaghetti, selling baked goods and auctioning off items. He says the goal of the dinner is "to help with any expenses that they have, medical expenses coming up."
People in the sheriff's department, as well as the Van Buren County community, have donated time and food to make the event happen. Fisk says despite going through cancer treatments, Jahr still does whatever he can for the sheriff's department.
"From his EMT work, to the fire department to the marine division and everything he's done. He's given back himself," Fisk says. "He's been involved in fundraisers of his own. It's time to give back and help."
