NEWAYGO COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Deputies in Newaygo County are looking for a missing toddler from Barton Township, and the case has now been classified an Amber Alert.
Amber Rose Smith was last seen at her home on 13 Mile Road and Cottonwood at roughly 2:00 p.m. Tuesday.
Her father says that he had gone to a different room and she was gone when her returned. He and his wife searched for her and called police when they couldn't find her.
Officers arrived and began searching the immediate area with canines and an MSP helicopter.
She was wearing a black halter-top, with a pink tie, and was possibly wearing jeans with no shoes.
She has blond hair and blueish-hazel eyes.
Amber's father told Newschannel 3 that there have been suspicious vehicles around the home lately, specifically a green truck. Police are looking into that report.
Officers say that tips have come in overnight and they are checking them out. They say that there are no signs of foul play.
Newschannel 3 has also been told that little Amber has a history of wandering off, and Tuesday she may have wandered off with the family dogs.
The dogs came back, but Amber did not.
There are a total of five kids at the home.
Police say they are concerned since it was cold at night and the tracking dogs they have brought in have not picked up any trails.
If you see her, you are asked to call Newaygo County Central Dispatch at (231)689-5288.
Police say they need more volunteer searchers. People are asked to come to the Barton Twp. hall on Cottonwood Ave off 17 mile in Paris. They must check in first, they ask that no one searches on their own.
They are holding out hope she will be found. But say the weather overnight got very cold and the woods are filled with animals. The woods are very dense. They have swamps, thick brush, lots of trees and corn fields to search. Searchers have very rough terrain to cover.
Wednesday they will re-search some areas where they looked Tuesday. Once again dogs and airplanes will be out. They are focusing on a one mile radius around Smith's home. If she is not found there they will expand the area.
