Tribe wants Redskins to change name
WASHINGTON, D.C. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Another Washington showdown is in the works, but this drama is over the name of the city's NFL franchise, the Washington Redskins.
The Oneida Indian Nation is picking up momentum, attempting to change that name.
The tribe is set to meet with NFL officials next month to take up the issue.
"It's a dictionary-defined offensive racial epithet. You shouldn't be using that to sell a national sports team to America or to the rest of the world," said Ray Halbritter.
But Redskins owner Dan Snyder isn't budging, saying as long as the brand sells, it'll stay the way it is.
The push for change gained a lot of support last week when President Obama weighed in on the controversy, telling the Associated Press he'd think about changing the name if he owned the team.
