Holland police dogs break in bulletproof vests
HOLLAND, Mich. (AP) - The Holland Police Department has outfitted its two police dogs with some new and necessary hardware.
The Holland Sentinel reports that canines Henry and Niki are getting accustomed to wearing black bulletproof vests. The vests are emblazoned with "Police" in bold white letters on the side.
The fitted vests cost the department nothing thanks to the Vested Interest in K9s Inc. It's a nonprofit group that has raised $155,375 to buy vests for 163 canines in 30 states. The vests would have cost about $2,000 each if the department had to buy them.
Sgt. Scott Doza says the vests are needed because police dogs are at-risk just like human officers. Henry is a 7-year-old shepherd. Niki is a 4-year-old Malinois.
