Funeral information set for fallen trooper as suspect arraigned
MASON COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Newschannel 3 is following new developments in the shooting death of Michigan State Trooper Paul Butterfield on Monday night.
Police arrested a young married couple in connection with the murder, and now one of the two suspects has been arraigned.
Butterfield, a trooper with the Hart Post, was shot in the head during a routine traffic stop in Sherman Township around 6:20 p.m. Monday.
State Police say the accused couple, Sarah and Eric Knysz, then took off.
A passerby called 9-1-1 minutes afterwards.
The couple was arrested a short time later in a stolen car.
Wednesday, 20-year-old Sarah, who is pregnant, was charged with two felonies, but her 19-year-old husband Eric, the prime suspect, has yet to make a court appearance.
Sarah was charged with being an accessory after the fact and unlawful driving away.
Her husband Eric, still in a Traverse City hospital, will be charged Thursday on four counts, including murder of an officer.
Sarah sobbed openly during her arraignment, as she was charged for her role in Butterfield's death.
Police say the couple was likely on their way home from Ludington when Eric shot and killed Trooper Butterfield.
Prosecutors are now waiting on police reports and hoping to learn more.
The Mason County Prosecutor has already approved four charges against Eric, and there could be more charges coming from Manistee County as well.
The 19-year-old father to be has a lengthy criminal history.
"Eric has been arrested for B&E's, he's stolen a gun, he shot detectives, he shoots out windows, he's had domestic violence arrests..." said his aunt, Mary Spoffard.
The family tells Newschannel 3 that Eric admits to killing Butterfield.
"I can't ask why, I can only say 'you really (expletive) up this time. You did a good job, buddy, you know where you're headed,'" Spoffard said of the act of violence which has destroyed two families lives.
Funeral arrangements have been set for Trooper Butterfield.
Visitation will take place from 10:00 to 1:00 p.m. at Manistee High School, with the funeral service scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
Eric Knysz is expected to be released from the hospital Wednesday evening and arraigned Thursday.
Sarah, meanwhile, is being held on $250,000 bond.
