Ex-husband in court on murder charges
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) A Saginaw man faced a judge Monday morning after police say he murdered a woman in Portage.
Portage Public Safety found 56-year-old Delores Smith dead in her home at Devonshire Apartments on Thursday.
Her son tells us Clinton Smith, the man charged Monday, was her ex-husband.
We just found out from police how Delores died. They tell us they found her in her apartment with a single stab wound to the neck.
A judge charged her ex-husband, Clinton Smith, with murder just a few hours ago. He faces life in prison.
Smith did not have anything to say to the judge Monday. Instead, he sat quietly and calmly as he received his charges and was denied bond.
A co-worker at the Kalamazoo County Juvenile Home called police when Delores didn't show up for work.
At this point, police are not saying why Clinton Smith killed his ex-wife, just that he specifically targeted her, stabbed her and then ran away to Saginaw.
We spoke to Delores Smith's oldest son, Felix Anderson, who says he's still trying to wrap his head around this tragedy.
"When you receive news like that, its utter shock, until everything is processed because you go into a state of unbelief. You live, you adapt, and you adjust, there's no love like a mother's love, and there's nothing that can replace her presence," said Anderson.
Smith's children are planning on setting up a scholarship fund at the Kalamazoo County Juvenile Home, where she worked.
They plan to hold a vigil where she lived at the Devonshire Apartments.
Anderson tells us his mother's body is on its way to her hometown in Mississippi. Her funeral is planned for this Saturday.
Clinton Smith is expected back in court at the end of the month.
