On Mackinac Island, GOP gathers as 2014 ideas, races take shape
MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The Republican Leadership Conference is underway on Mackinac Island.
About 1,500 Republicans are meeting to get ready for the 2014 and 2016 elections, but the real focus is on the 2014 race for Governor.
While Governor Rick Snyder has not officially announced that he'll be running for re-election, but make no mistake, he will be on the ballot come next November, as most people would call the Republican Leadership Conference the unofficial kickoff to the campaign season.
In our sit-down one-on-one interview with the Governor, it definitely sounded as though he was revving up his campaign.
"If you look at the activities, we've got a lot of positives going on that really say I'm excited about the future and a number of things I want to work on won't happen in just one year," Snyder said. "It's an extended work effort."
You can already begin to hear the Governor forming his argument for re-election.
Newschannel 3 also recently sat down with Governor Snyder's likely opponent, Democrat Mark Schauer, who will try to take the Governorship in November 2014.
"Rick Snyder is a corporate venture capital CEO guy, and his approach has been sort of like a CEO," Schauer said. "I have made up my mind on this issue and now have to do it."
That interview also made it fairly clear how Schauer will likely run his race, as he called Snyder's leadership "questionable," and said that "he's not been an effective leader as a Governor."
