Murder suspect returning after years on the run
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) Police are working to bring a murder suspect back to Calhoun County, after he spent nearly two years on the run.
Police tell NewsChannel 3 they arrested 33-year-old Shawn McKnight in Indianapolis.
In September 2011, a man named Terence Ware was shot and killed in Battle Creek at the intersection of Bowen and Howland.
Police found 26-year-old Ware dead in the street.
Witnesses at the scene that night say there was a large party broken up by police just before the shooting.
These parties were known to be a problem.
But they could not track down who pulled the trigger.
Detectives told us Ware and McKnight were no strangers to conflict. The two knew each other and had fought in the past.
Police believe one of those fights led to this murder.
I have little kids myself and we all know bullets don't have eyes and stuff, so that's another thing you worry about, said neighbor Lonnie Edwards. Bullets can go anywhere and hit your kids."
Edwards witnessed the shooting two years ago.
He found Ware lying on the ground yelling, just a feet from his house.
Police rushed not only to the scene but also to the hospital. After Ware was taken there, a large group showed up causing a commotion that led to a hospital lockdown for more than two hours.
Almost two years to the day of the murder, police arrested McKnight in Indiana on Saturday.
McKnight is currently awaiting extradition back to Battle Creek.
He will face three felony charges.
