Court: Facebook likes protected as free speech
(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A U.S. Court of Appeals is giving Facebook a thumbs up after ruling that likes on the social network are protected as free speech under the constitution.
The lawsuit was brought on by six employees at the Hampton Sheriff's Office in Virgini who in 2009 lost their jobs after expressing support for their boss' opponent in an upcoming election by liking the opponent's Facebook page.
The court reversed a lower-court judge who said that simply clicking the like button on a Facebook page did not amount to a substantive statement that warrants constitutional protection.
