UPDATED: State Trooper shot in Mason County has died
MASON COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Michigan State trooper who was shot in the head after a traffic stop Monday night in Mason County has died, Newschannel 3 has learned.
Trooper Paul Butterfield was shot at 6:20 p.m., after stopping a vehicle on Custer Road near Townline Road.
A few minutes later, a passerby found Trooper Butterfield on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head.
State Police reported that two suspects, one male, and one female, have been taken into custody.
Following a tip call, State Police were able to quickly hone in on their suspect with two identified vehicles for which they were hunting, a 1988 Chevy pickup truck, and a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix.
They found their suspect at a gas station/convenience store near Wellston, Mich., in Manistee County, and a shootout ensued.
The male suspect was reportedly shot in the leg, and both suspects were taken into custody.
