Bill passes Senate that raises fines for illegal cigarette sales
LANSING, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Michigan is looking to stamp out underage smoking and punish stores that sell to them.
Lawmakers approved a bill Thursday 37-0 that would raise the fine for an initial violation from $50 to $100.
Further violations could cost $500 per violation.
It would be the first increase in 25 years.
Supporters say it sends a message that smoking by minors is unacceptable.
The legislation now heads to the House.
