Community rallies around family of deceased Belding boy
BELDING, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Many people in Belding knew young Devon Morrison, and now they're mourning his death and standing up to support his family.
The loss is, obviously, a heartbreaking one for the Belding community.
Tears were shed Monday afternoon when Belding Police Chief Dale Nelson broke the news, teary himself, and saying that "we'll always remember Devon."
Dozens have been on hand the past three days doing anything they could to help with the search and comfort the family.
Volunteers helped in the search which nearly went from sun-up to sun-down on Sunday.
There's no question the 10-year-old Devon touched many in the community, as people told Newschannel 3 he was anything but shy, and was always the first to introduce himself.
He was known as the light of the neighborhood, and he is still bringing strangers together, even with this tragic ending.
"We didn't ask him to come over smiling, ready to chat our ear off, but he did; now we need to return the favor," said next-door neighbor Tara Williams. "He lit up the neighborhood; he always had a smile to go bopping down the road smiling. He was a great kid."
Neighbors plan to release a balloon once a month in Devon's memory.
The school also tells Newschannel 3 that grief counselors are also on hand for students to help them through this difficult time.
