Police search for gunman in afternoon shooting in Edison neighborhood
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Kalamazoo Police are searching for a gunman who opened fire just as kids were walking home from school.
It happened at the intersection of Clinton and Race in the Edison neighborhood, just before 3:00 p.m.
Witnesses say there was a large crowd gathered, and the man fired into it.
We spoke to a mother and son caught in the crossfire, who were so close to the violence Wednesday that they looked the shooter in the eye.
The mother and her teen were driving home when they say the shooter pulled his bike right out in front of them.
The teenager said the shooter was specifically targeting someone behind a tree.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says the 18-year-old victim was driven to Bronson Hospital and has non-life threatening injuries.
Police describe the suspected shooter as a black teen in his early 20's, who was wearing a white t-shirt, blue shorts, and a tan fisherman's hat, and that he fled on a gray mountain bike.
A neighbor who heard the shots while outside with her children is worried what will happen next.
Last month, just a few blocks down the road, 43-year-old Leonel Lopez was shot and killed.
21-year-old DeMarcus Finley is charged in that murder.
It was also a violent 4th of July in the Edison neighborhood, as a man was shot in the thigh when a suspect decided to fire 17 rounds with bullets slamming into parked cars on Hays Park Avenue.
Neighbors say they just want everyone to put their guns down.
If you have any information on the shooting, you are asked to call Silent Observer or the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.
