Semi crash closes northbound I-196
ALLEGAN COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - One person is dead after a two-semi truck crash that closed northbound I-196 at the 25 mile marker in Casco Township Wednesday morning.
Traffic was being routed off at the 22 mile marker, which is North Shore Drive.
It appears that one semi crossed the median into oncoming traffic and hit another truck head-on. The driver of the truck that crossed the median was killed. Two people in the other semi only received minor injuries.
The guard wire between the freeway lanes was stretched taught by the semi. A sergeant on scene says he's never seen anything like it before. The cables are designed to hold passenger vehicles, but were strained by the heavy semi.
The driver who was killed is a 38-year-old man from Grand Haven.
The freeway was reopened around 2:00.
