Battle Creek residents remember woman murdered over 2 decades ago
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) People in Battle Creek will come together Wednesday night to remember a woman who was murdered more than 20 years ago.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of S.A.F.E. Place, a shelter for domestic violence victims in Battle Creek.
They're inviting the community to help honor their mission by remembering one of the most tragic cases of domestic violence in the area.
Debra Frost was murdered by her ex-boyfriend in 1990, shortly after he was released from prison.
Frost had a restraining order against him but, due to legislation at the time, police were unable to arrest the man before he killed Frost and himself in front of her young daughter.
After Frost's death, her mom took up the fight to change the law to provide additional protection for future victims.
Frost's family and friends created quilts in her memory to display at S.A.F.E. Place's 30th anniversary.
The public can take a moment to honor Frost and all victims of domestic violence.
Frost's mom plans to speak at the event Wednesday evening as well.
S.A.F.E. Place in Battle Creek serves 1500 victims of domestic violence every year.
The organization provides shelter to nearly 400 victims and their children free of charge.
They recently lost 55,000 dollars in funding.
On this, their 30th anniversary, S.A.F.E. Place wants people to know how big of an issue domestic violence still is in our communities and how much those victims need your support.
One out of every three women is a current victim or survivor of domestic violence. And I am still asked every day by someone, Well why does she stay? Why doesnt she just leave? And yet Ive never heard someone ask a gunshot victim, Well why werent you wearing a bullet proof vest? says Jennifer Fopma, the S.A.F.E. Place Executive Director. We serve crime victims. And we cant hold them responsible for keeping themselves safe. So thats really the issue we need to keep in front of people.
If you'd like to show your support on S.A.F.E. Place's 30th anniversary and honor the life of Debra Frost, the event begins at 4pm outside the Battle Creek Community Foundation. Its located at 34 W. Jackson Street in Battle Creek. For more information, call Holly Munsch at 269-962-2181.
