Kzoo Co. man to serve up to 32 years in wife's murder
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Kalamazoo County man accused of shooting and killing his wife learned his sentence Monday morning.
John Kovach says he never meant to kill his wife Nancy.
He says he snapped after the two fought at home in June.
Now, Kovach will spend up to 32 years in prison for Nancy's murder.
Her friends told Newschannel 3 today they're still shocked by her death. They had no idea the Kovachs were having trouble at home.
Michelle Cook sat in the same cubicle as Nancy Kovach every day at work. She took the stand to read John a letter.
When you killed nancy, Cook read, you caused a greater pain than you could even imagine.
Nancy's friends tearfully told Newschannel 3 they're still hoping to wake up from this nightmare.
John admitted he shot and killed Nancy at their home back in June.
He says she called him a lousy dad in front of their kids for 10 years, and that he reached his breaking point that night, fighting over who would make dinner.
9 times out of 10, I know this would have never happened, said one friend, Shela Reuther. It was just that one stupid little time for whatever reason his brain misfired. and now we're all doing this and going to the gravesite.
The judge told Kovach the end of this tragedy is also the beginning of a much less satisfying life for him, their family and her friends.
It wasn't just a death or just something on TV for people to follow, Cook said. This is a real person.
Kovach will spend up to 32 years in prison. He also has to pay nearly $18,000 in restitution.
The Kovach's two young kids are now living with Nancy's sister.
