Shots fired in Kalamazoo, one person hospitalized
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Witnesses to a shooting Wednesday afternoon in Kalamazoo told Newschannel 3 that like on most days, there was a large crowd of people gathered on corners at Clinton Avenue and Race Street, just before 3:00 p.m.
That's when they say a man on a bike going down Race Street exchanged words with another man there.
The man on the bike then reportedly turned and opened fire, shooting betwen two and five times.
Police say that the victim was wounded but drove himself to the hospital, and is expected to be fine.
Police have described the suspect as a black male in his early 20's, with a white t-shirt, blue shorts, a tan fisherman's style hat, who rode away on a gray mountain bike.
That the incident took place at such a busy time in the Edison neighborhood, when kids were starting to get out of school had more than a few parents concerned.
"I mean, it's kind of worrisome that I've got to watch my back every time we come outside because people are shooting," said one witness, Aneisha Smith. "It's, like, the third shooting or whatever that's happened here since we moved here."
"They want us to do our part as homeowners to call all the time, but sometimes when they get here, they're not here and they're gone," explained a neighbor, Mary Martin. "We are trying really hard just like police are, because they want us to report it all the time."
Residents are frustrated because of the other shootings in the area recently.
Just last month at 1400 Race Street, Lionel Lopez was shot and killed, also in the middle of the day, in an incident which remains very fresh in people's minds.
People on the scene told Newschannel 3 that as soon as the shots were fired, people ran to get their kids into their houses and find where the kids were.
Police are still investigating at this time.
