Recovery of boy's body a tragic end to an exhausing weekend for police, volunteers
BELDING, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The body of 10 year old Devon Morrison was discovered Monday in the Flat River in Belding.
Morrison had been missing since Saturday night when he didn't come home after fishing.
It's been an exhausting couple of days for police and dive teams and this is obviously not the outcome they had hoped for-- and now police are trying to figure out exactly what happened.
"It's an unfortunate end to what has been a 3 day affair for everyone," said Belding Police Chief Dale Nelson.
Police spent hours Sunday night and Monday searching from the water and the air, even taping off Devon's parents home late last night to search for clues.
"There was no one taken into custody," Chief Nelson said. "The police tape was put up because they wanted to use a search dog there and we did not want any other disturbance of the area around the exterior of the residence."
But police say the only tips they had led them to the river--and the ending they were afraid of.
"It's difficult but like the family it's closure," said Chief Nelson. "I spent some time prior to coming out with the family; we're all all upset about it cause we expected better."
Chief Nelson knew Devon personally; he says the boy was found with his fishing pole, doing what made him happiest.
"We need to remember Devon for Devon," Chief Nelson said. "Whatever joy that he brought to whoever he contacted was just a wonderful thing and I feel honored to be able to spend some time with him and interact with him because he was a great kid."
We asked the chief if he believes this is anything other than an accident.
He didn't specifically answer that, saying only that they will continue their investigation.
