State police rule 3-year-old's death an accident
HASTINGS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Michigan State Police are investigating the tragic death of a 3-year-old boy in Hastings.
Police say little Joel Newton was playing with his 5-year-old brother shortly after going to bed, when he placed a plastic bag over his head.
Unfortunately, he was unable to remove the bag, so his brother called for his father, who was unable to revive him.
Joel was airlifted to Helen DeVos Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The death has been ruled an accident.
Two fundraisers have been set up to help the family.
After-Effects Hair Studio in Middleville is hosting a cut-a-thon on August 10th, from 9:00 a.m. to noon, and the Joel Newton Memorial Fund has been opened at Hastings City Bank.
Both are designed to help little Joel's family through this time.
