Police looking into fatal rollover crash in Ottawa County
OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Michigan State Police and the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department were on scene most of the day Friday following a two car crash on I-196 that has left one dead and two others hospitalized.
According to reports, a semi-truck was driving next to an out-of-state Jeep Wrangler on eastbound I-196, when some kind of contact was created.
The Wrangler crossed the median, and rolled several times into the westbound lane.
There were four people in the Wrangler, all of them related. Two people were ejected from the vehicle--an adult male, who died as a result of his injuries, and a child who was taken to DeVos Children's Hospital in serious condition.
The female driver was also taken to the hospital in serious condition. A teenaged front seat passenger is also in serious condition Friday night.
Investigators say there is no sign of road rage or alcohol as a cause.
The truck driver was released, as investigators are currently not assigning fault in the crash, which remains under investigation.
Police also add that the people in the Jeep were traveling with another vehicle, and that the occupants of the other vehicle were not aware of the crash.
Police are trying to track down those people before releasing the names of the victims.
The crash shut down I-196 in both directions for at least 7 hours.
