Gerald R. Ford Airport moves forward with chemical de-icer plan
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Gerald R. Ford International Airport is moving forward with a plan that will funnel de-icing chemicals into nearby waterways.
The DEQ approved the plan Friday night.
Beginning in October, the airport will build an on-site treatment system that will direct the organic solution into the Thornapple River.
Regulators expect the $20 million project will improve water quality in the Thornapple River and in Plaster Creek.
The project is expected to be finished by 2015.
