Man sentenced over toxic barrels
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Kalamazoo County man who buried hundreds of barrels full of toxic chemicals on his property learned his sentence Monday.
It's a story Newschannel 3 first broke five years ago and has continued to follow every step of the way.
Back in 2008 more than 500 toxic barrels were found on Donald Haugen's property in Texas Township following a pole barn fire.
Then in May of this year Haugen pleaded no contest to "knowingly releasing a hazardous substance."
Under the plea agreement Haugen will likely only receive probation and avoid jail time, but he will have to pay $2.6 million in restitution to the federal government and more than $50,000 to the state.
Monday a judge sentenced Haugen to five years of probation. He will have to pay the federal government $2,650,000 and the state $52,000. Haugen is also forbidden from being around or handling hazardous substances.
