Muskegon considered as barge terminal location
MUSKEGON, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The city of Muskegon is being scouted as a prime location for a possible barge terminal, connecting Michigan to gulf coast exporters.
The Michigan Agri-Business Association says it would connect the state's farm communities to these exporters through Chicago and the Mississippi River barge system.
The group is also scouting other sites, including the east side of the state, at the Saginaw River and Port Huron.
Right now, many products are shipped by rail, so going to water-based transportation would be a huge change.
There's no timetable for a decision.
