UPDATED: Otsego woman killed while hitchhiking on I-94
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Michigan State Police have identified a woman who was hit and killed on eastbound I-94 Monday night.
51-year-old Tammy Hartman, of Otsego, was killed after being struck by a semi-truck and an M-DOT vehicle Monday night.
Eastbound I-94 was shut down at the 9th Street exit for several hours during the course of the investigation.
Michigan State Police say a witness told them he was driving I-94 and grazed the victim with his car as she was walking.
He got out of the car to see if she was all right.
He told Police the woman was fine and told him she was out looking for her sister.
As the man called 911 the woman who he described as a white woman with dark hair wearing jean shorts, took off.
A short time later police say the woman was first struck by a semi and then she was hit by a MDOT vehicle.
Police say the MDOT truck swerved after that and also hit another vehicle.
Michigan State Police say the victim's body was so badly damaged they couldn't identify her at the time.
The victim has since been identified as Ms.Hartman.
Troopers have discovered that the women were sisters hitchhiking from Otsego to California. They got in an argument shortly before the accident happened. The sister who was killed was walking up the ramp when the crash happened.
