Group holds mock citizenship ceremony to highlight immigration reform
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) A group of over 100 people held a symbolic citizenship ceremony at a Kalamazoo County courthouse Thursday.
The members of Michigan United are trying to draw attention to immigration reform.
They are hoping for a earned path to citizenship for immigrants that are living in the U.S.
Participants came from throughout West Michigan to take part. They rehearsed the Oath of Citizenship, recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang the National Anthem.
"In my country, my race and religion made me a third class citizen, said Ivan Gomes, a documented immigrant from Borneo and a small business owner in Kalamazoo. I didnt have access to scholarships for college, jobs in the government, business loans, and many other things. Thats why I came to this country because if youre willing to work hard, its the land of opportunity. We know from history, and I know from experience, that separate but equal doesnt work, and we dont want to repeat that mistake. We need an eventual, earned path to citizenship as part of immigration reform.
