Student workforce cited as key to bringing 500 jobs to Kent County
KENT COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – 500 jobs are coming to West Michigan.
Teleperformance is a nationwide telecommunications juggernaut that provides customer care call centers to large corporations that need them.
Thanks in part to a $600,000 performance-based grant, Teleperformance has agreed to invest nearly four million dollars to put its next call center in Cascade Township.
The 500 jobs, to be filled over the next three years, start around ten dollars an hour and offer a number of things attractive to students, but in our recovering economy, students provide employers with something growing more scarce every day.
“Retention, expansion and business attraction is what we focus on,” said Megan Sall, Right Place.
Thanks to some incentives and the Right Place, Megan Sall and her non-profit landed a whale for Kent County.
“They expressed some interest in West Michigan,” said Sall.
Sall says that was her cue to start selling.
“First and foremost I think is the quality of our talent here,” said Sall.
Talent like senior Ava Koeble, who will be graduating from GVSU in May. That’s a good reason for Teleperformance to target students.
“Our unemployment is down to six percent in Kent County,” said Sall.
That’s actually a bad thing for attracting businesses, but as Koeble says;
“A lot of college students have a hard time finding a job,” said Koeble.
The Right Place brags that there are more than 82,000 college students in West Michigan, many of them looking for work that fits in with their school schedule and can pay them something better than minimum wage.
Koebel says she used to work in a customer care call center.
“It taught me a lot about verbal communication skills,” said Koebel, “and being able to think independently and on my feet.”
But no job is perfect.
“The cubical aspect of it is probably the one aspect that’s not particularly interesting,” said Koebel.
Teleperformance hopes to start training soon and have its new customer support center up and running by September.
