Bill renames I-94 in Van Buren County for trooper
LANSING, Mich. (AP) - New legislation would rename a portion of Interstate 94 in southwest Michigan for a state trooper who died after being struck by a vehicle in 2000.
Part of I-94 in Van Buren County could be called the "Trooper Rick L. Johnson Highway." Rep. Aric Nesbitt says the day before his death, Johnson had talked a suicidal man off an overpass on the same highway.
The 35-year-old Johnson stopped a westbound vehicle on May 6, 2000. While walking back to his patrol car, another vehicle crashed into vehicle, pinning the trooper between the cars.
Nesbitt, a Lawton Republican, says memorializing Johnson is the least the state can do to honor him. He announced the legislation on Monday.
