New details on infant death investigation in Parchment
PARCHMENT, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - We are learning new information Monday morning concerning the death of an infant in Parchment.
Witnesses tell Newschannel 3 Kalamazoo Township police arrived at a Parchment apartment on Devon Ave. just before 5 p.m. Saturday and stayed well into the night.
The Township of Kalamazoo Police is now identifying the victim as 5-month old Naima Inex Atkinson. An autopsy was conducted over the weekend.
Officials say it appears the child may have died as a result of an "unsafe sleep environment."
In the course of this investigation, the infant's father, Tarqua Deron Atkinson, DOB 4/22/1987 was taken into custody on warrants unrelated to this investigation.
The baby's great-grandfather says his grandson may appear in court on those unrelated charges Monday.
The Kalamazoo Township Police strongly suggest parents and caretakers of infant children review and practice safe sleep practices for infants and young children in their care.
