W. K. Kellogg air tower to close

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The Federal Aviation Administration is closing several air traffic controllers in Michigan, including the tower at W.K. Kellogg Airport in Battle Creek.

The move could have a big impact on safety as well.

Friday's notification was what everyone at W.K. Kellogg was hoping would not happen, but when the final list of tower closures came out, Kellogg was on it.

There were six smaller Michigan airports on the proposed list, and three will close.

Jackson, Ann Arbor, and Muskegon will stay open.

What is unique at Kellogg though is that while there are no commercial flights, it is still usually ranked as the third busiest in the state.

At one point on Friday, the airport had 77 flights in one hour.

There is a lot going on at W.K. Kellogg, and the city says to lose the tower is going to have a major impact.

The change is expected to drastically limit the WMU College of Aviation, which is based at the airport, and cut into flight time.
