Man crashes into building during police chase

BENTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – State police in Berrien County were involved in a chase Thursday night.

It started in Benton Township around 11:15 p.m. when a trooper tried to pull a man over for improper lane usage. The driver took off at a high rate of speed and a chase ensued.

Troopers say that the man blew through several stop signs as he drove into Benton Harbor.

He eventually missed a curve on Union near Empire and lost control of his vehicle, crashing into two buildings. He came to rest inside one of them.

The driver was injured in the crash and was taken to the hospital.

Police say that alcohol was a factor in the crash. The driver is facing charges of OWI, possession of a controlled substance and fleeing police.
