Kilpatrick to remain in jail awaiting sentence
DETROIT (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick will have to stay in jail as he awaits his sentence for corruption in office.
A judge made that decision Monday, hours after a jury convicted Kilpatrick on 24 charges, including racketeering, conspiracy, bribery, and tax crimes.
Twelve jurors deliberated for 15 days.
During the 5-month long trial, prosecutors portrayed Kilpatrick as a greedy politician.
Prosecutors said Kilpatrick turned the Mayor's office into a cash machine by collecting kickbacks and bribes from people who wanted city business and looting a non-profit fund that he created.
The verdict is another defeat for Kilpatrick, who left office in 2008, amid an unrelated scandal involving sexually explicit text messages and an affair with an aide.
Just one of the charges against Kilpatrick carries a maximum punishment of 20 years behind bars.
