Portage schools to consider surveillance upgrade

PORTAGE, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Portage Public School administrators are considering upgrades to the school surveillance system.

Portage Schools spokesperson Sara Baker confirmed for Newschannel 3 that the district's director of information and technology requested nearly $30,000 to update software, operating cameras at the district's 14 schools.

The surveillance camera system was put in place in 2009, at which time the district went with a less expensive version of the software.

Now, the director says that frequent breaks are experienced in live and recorded video.

Baker says that the move was planned all along, and the district feels it is important to the safety of the students and community of Portage.

The board is expected to vote on the issue next week.
