Friends and family gather to remember Mary Lands
MARSHALL, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – Waiting for answers. Nine years ago, 39-year-old Mary Lands disappeared from her Marshall apartment.
Newschannel 3 has been following this case ever since.
Though she was declared dead two years ago, friends and family haven’t given up hope whoever did this, will be brought to justice.
Countless man hours have been put into finding Mary Lands. More than 2,000 days later they’re still trying to find the break that will crack this case. 49 balloons were released into the air downtown Marshall. That’s for how many years old Mary Lands would be, if she were alive today.
Investigators say the Calhoun County prosecutor plans to see what can be done to close the case.
A private investigator believes at least 6 people know where Mary’s body is right now.
They believe her fiancée at the time, Christopher Pratt is responsible for her death.
Investigators uncovered she had been a victim of domestic violence for years, but no one knew until it was too late.
“The most important thing to remember is that domestic violence is the most preventable crime only 27% report a domestic violence incident,” said Jennifer Fopma, S.A.F.E. Place Shelter Executive Director.
“She kept it totally a secret these women need to be strong and stand up for their rights. It's a big learning lesson for everybody,” said Anita Marshall, Mary’s Mother.
Mary’s fiancée was sentenced back in 2008 to 4 ½ to 15 years in prison for assault and unlawful imprisonment involving a different woman.
