Report: Palisades may have to shut down for good

COVERT, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A new report says Palisades Nuclear Power Plant may be forced to shut down within the next few years.

Reuters is reporting that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission told Entergy Corporation, which owns Palisades, that a potential issue must be fixed or the reactor may be shut down by 2017.

The NRC says that while Palisades is currently safe, the metal in the aging reactor vessel could soon reach the regulatory limit for handling "pressurized thermal shock."

Because of this Entergy has to provide evidence that the reactor vessel would remain safe beyond that time limit if it wants to keep Palisades open beyond 2017.

The NRC will address the issue next Tuesday.
