Group looks to open charter school for elite athletes

WEST MICHIGAN (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A non-profit group is looking to open a charter school in Western Michigan, aiming to meet the academic needs of elite athletes.

The Legacy Academy would serve grades 7 through 12.

It would have two locations, The Revolution Arena for Hockey in Battle Creek, and the Kingdom Indoor Soccer Center in Portage.

The school targets hockey players, figure skaters, and soccer players, who could train and take classes at the same location.

The group is seeking a charter from Northern Michigan University and have applied for a $110,000 planning grant from the state.
