Scholarships offered to help with childcare

LANSING, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – For the first time, the State of Michigan is offering scholarships to help families pay for quality childcare for infants and toddlers.

Through the new program, 200 low-income families will be able to get nearly half of their childcare costs covered.

To qualify for an Early Start Scholarship, a parent must be working full time, a full-time student or a mix of the two.

The new scholarships will help each family for one full year and are a one-time award.

Scholarships are available in 81 of Michigan's 83 counties.

Regions experiencing higher poverty levels will be given priority when it comes to distributing the money.

The 700,000 dollars for the Early Start Scholarships come from a federal block grant.

Half of the 200 available scholarships have already been awarded.
